Homilies and Reflections

A Life Changing Event

Fr. Alfred McBride, O.Praem.,

On Mount Tabor in the Holy Land a Church has been built to honor Christ’s Transfiguration. The architect commissioned experts in mosaics to do a representation of the Transfiguration scene.

The artists chose chips that would collect and reflect light. Hence when the morning sunshine streams through the clear windows of the dome and touches the mosaic, the garments of Jesus again seem to glow like snow and his face to shine as the sun. When the first streaks of dawn appear, the morning star arises in our hearts.

Intimacy between lover and beloved is a condition for change. In scripture God humbles himself to lift up the hearts of his people.

Our first reading describes our God who steps down into the life of Abraham and rescues him from the dead end of having no children or a land. “I will make of you a great nation.” (Gn 12:2)

God walked cheerfully into the life of Abraham and Sarah and their extended family and bound them to himself in a covenant. God transformed them into the beginning of his chosen people.

Jesus fulfilled the promise to Abraham. In Jesus the Son of God became man and walked among us. On Mount Tabor Jesus revealed his inner glory to Peter, James and John.

His transfiguration is a promise of our own life change begun in Baptism and nourished by the Eucharist. The scene foretells his resurrection and ours.

God the Father tells us Jesus is his beloved Son and commands us, “Listen to him.” Our process of transformation begins by listening to Christ. Yes we should love, adore and stay close to Jesus. This will happen when we keep our ears open to what he says to us.

Prayer

Transfigured Christ we think of the face of Blessed Mother Teresa, the smile of Blessed John XXIII and the stirring voice of Pope John Paul II. They received the graces of your Transfiguration because they listened to, loved and adored you. Take us Lord and change us.
Amen.

Reflect

What were three life changing events in your experience? How would you allow God to change you to the person you were meant to be? What happens to an adult who ceases to grow and develop in faith?
